Here We Go Again!

We have very exciting news. Phoebe is pregnant. The lucky father is my friend, Denise Gregg's Dino. Dino is not just an AKC champion but a Grand Champion. Better yet, he is a real sweetheart! His photo is on top, Phoebe's on the bottom.

My best guestimate is that Phoebe is on day

Here is the chart which gives you some idea of what is going on.

Fri 30 Nov 2012First day of mating.
48 hours after the first mating the bitch should be mated                                        again.
Subsequent matings occurring over a period of time                                                     enhance the chances of fertilization taking place.
The spermatozoa migrate up through the cervix.
Sat 1 Dec 2012Sperm travel searching for a mature ripened eggs.
Sat 1- Sun 2 Spermatozoa reach the eggs in the oviducts.
Sun 2 - Mon 3 Dec Fertilization occurs in the oviducts which lead from the                                                 ovaries to the uterus.
Mon Dec 3 - Wed 5 Fertilization eggs migrate down the oviducts and into                                                       the uterine horns.
The migration continue to enable even spacing of the                                                  embryos.
During this migration the eggs will grow into a                                                     blastocystes.
Tue Dec 11- 13 The blastocystes implant in the wall of the uterus.
Tue Dec 11 -
Tue 25
The blastocystes will grow into an embryos.
During the next two weeks the important organs will                                                  develop.
Fri Dec 14  - Fri Dec 21Dams nipples begin to pink enlarge.
The fur on the dams belly and around the nipples may                                                    become thinner.

Thu Dec 20 - Thu 27 Morning sickness might occur due to hormonal changes                                                    or stretching and distension of the uterus. Dam may                                                    appear a bit apathetic. She may be off her feed for a while                                                 and vomit from time to time.
Feeding the dam several meals spaced throughout the day                                              might help.
Your veterinarian may want to prescribe a drug to relax                                                       the uterus.
Tue Dec 25 -Sat 29 An experienced person (a breeder or a veterinarian)                                                         can tell by careful palpation whether the dam is pregnant.
It's now the best time to do this because the embryos are                                  walnut-sized now and easy to count.
Fri Dec  28 Start to increase the dams food ration.
Don't overfeed, excessive weight gain should be avoided.
The fetuses are now and are fully developed miniature dogs.
Thu Jan 3  The Dams abdomen starts to get larger.
Sun Jan 13  It's very easy now to feel the puppies, counting them might
be a bit more difficult.
Wed Jan 16  -
Thu 24
Dam begins to spend a lot more time in self-grooming.
Her breasts become even more swollen.
She may become a bit restlessness and begin to search for                                                    a suitable place to have her puppies.
Fri Jan 18  The dam might lose her appetite during this period. Her                                            abdomen can be crowded with puppies.
It is better to feed several smaller meals spaced throughout                                                 the day.
You can easily detect abdominal movement now.
Fri Jan 18  -
Sat Feb 2
Nipples and vulva should be gently cleaned with warm                                                   water, you might want to trim the hairs surrounding the                                                nipples, to allow easier access for the puppies to suck.
Mon Jan 28 -
Thu 31
Milky fluid may be expressed from the nipples.
Tue Jan 29  You might want to start taking the dams rectal                                                       temperature each morning and evening.
Fri Feb 1  Twelve to 24 hours before she is due to deliver, the                                                           dams rectal temperature may drop from 101 to 98 degrees.
Clear discharge from the vulva might occur.
Expected date of whelp. Of course this is just an average.                                        Whelping may take place from the 59th to the 65th day.                                                Puppies born before the 58th day will probably be too young                                              to survive.

Household Chemicals and Your Pets

I created this blog for several reasons. One was to keep track of my puppy families. But another is to offer up information I hope will be helpful, not just to my families, but to all pet owners.

This week I'm doing some research into items commonly used inside and outside our homes with regard to how they can affect our pets. There is, fortunately, a lot of information on the web and I hope to share some of those links with you here.

I'm sure all of us have had the unfortunate experience of losing a pet prematurely, or have close friends who have. Havanese, for example, should live from 12 to 14 years. There are many who live well beyond 15 years. And, sadly there are some Havanese who don't make it to their 8th birthday. Sometimes accidents take the lives of our dear ones but, as often as not, cancer is the cause. Exposure to chemicals in and around our homes has long been suspected of causing these cancers.

Think about all the products we use on our floors, on our carpets, on our driveways, in our gardens and on our lawns. Then think about your pet who spends the majority of its time in these areas.

"The Truth About Cats, Dogs and Lawn Chemicals" is a PDF file put out by pesticidewatch.org and it is a real eye opener! I encourage all my readers to take a good look at this document.

I also hope my readers will feel free to comment on this article and add any information they have discovered about household chemicals or green alternatives.

One final note...I would appreciate your spreading the word about my blog. The more readers we have, the more information we can disperse...a kind of forum for all dog families!

Update on My Own Havanese Family

Here are some photos I took the other day of the five Havanese in my life.  Maxi's puppy, Digger, (formerly Burst) lives with my daughter on the weekends and with me during the week so he doesn't have to be cooped up while she's at work. Lily is the girl I bought from Kathy Ambler. And, of course, Phoebe, Maxi and Marli are my older girls.

Update on Georgie, Now Brutus

Jacqui, don't know if you remember the day I picked up Brutus (Georgie) you were going through the folder of information with me and Brutus was barking at his reflection in your refridgerator. Well he still likes trying to get at his reflection. I get such a kick out of him trying to get to the dog outside (his reflection in the door glass.)

Hi Jacqui,
I received the registration in the mail, thank you!

I hope this picture comes through (more to follow), I was trying to send ones that would show you how big he has gotten. Brutus/Georie is doing great. At his last vet appointment he weighed in at 7lbs! I'm thinking he's still the biggest one in the liter. That was on Oct. 1, his next appointment is this Monday, Oct. 22. I'll be sure to let you know what he weighs after that appointment.

He is the center of attention wherever we go. He just loves everyone so of course everyone loves him, and wants to hold him. It's difficult at puppy school because everyone is amazed at how fluffy he is and wants to hold him, even when we are supposed to be practicing or listening to the teacher.

We have had some set backs with the potty training but it is to be expected, or so the trainer says. He's been using the bell since the day we brought him home, then he discovered the upstairs and downstairs and thought the landings were his personal restrooms (lol.) I blocked those off and we're getting back on track.

He is such a cuddly, loving little guy. Every night at 10 pm he comes and finds me in my room watching TV, he'll cry and whine until I pick him up onto the bed, and of course I just have to do it (lol.) He snuggles up next to me and we watch TV until 11, then it's his bed time. It's outside for the last potty break for the night then he goes straight to his kennel and to sleep with no problems. We keep the kennel door open when we are home, he learned quickly that is the place to go when he wants to catch a quiet nap, or is tuckered out from playing with my 5 year old nephew.

My 14 year old son tells me quite often, "I'm so glad we got Brutus mom." I loved my Coton, but I can see the differance in the breed, or maybe it's just the dog. Brutus very seldom barks, he loves everyone, and although he will seek me out more often than the others he still has plenty of love for the rest of the family. My son came down the stairs with a big smile on his face the this morning because Brutus was crying at the bottom of the stairs looking for his play buddy. When my husband comes home Brutus runs to greet him, plays with him for a good hour then he'll look to see if I'm in the house. Once he finds me he's good and it's back to John for a little longer.

I just ordered a new camera, can't wait till it comes in. Be prepared for lots more pictures!

WE LOVE BRUTUS!!
Thanks for breeding such beautiful, absolutely loving dogs!

Updates on Sunray and Blaze

Sunray is now Bella and lives nearby. Here is what her family said about her recently:

Hi Jacqui!
Bella is doing great and has been a great addition to our family. She was at the vet yesterday and weighed 4.8 pounds. Michael has been teaching her how to play fetch, and she is learning it fast! She is a bit of a shoe thief, but she's not very good at hiding them. They are always found under the lazy boy! I will send some pictures as soon as we get a new computer.
Take care!
Becky

No photos yet but I am hoping!

And here's an update on Blaze, our tiniest one who is now Flash (after the superhero) and weighs a whopping 5.2 pounds!

Hi Jacqui,
Thanks for the microchip registry.  We received the hard copy, as well.

Flash/Blaze is just a remarkable puppy!  I was at the vet on 10-12 and he weighed 5.25 pounds.  He’s growing quickly and doing so well!!  We are wondering if he might end up to be a bit bigger than we originally thought (which would be great with 3 kids in the houseJ).  He is FULL of energy and loves to play.  We’ve also discovered that he is extremely outgoing.  He loves attention and affection from anyone and everyone he meets…and of course he’s so sweet that they all love him right back!

I attached a few photos that I took this morning!!

I hope you are doing well!
Julie

Update on Georgie (now Brutus)

Hi Jacqui, hope you received my little video of Brutus. (It's at the bottom of this post!)
I accidently touched the send button before I typed in the message. Just wanted to let you know how much he loves the blanket you sent home with him. My husband jokes that we should have called him Linus.

Michelle writes:
Brutus (Georgie) likes to be close to me, I was sitting at the table reading and he squeezed his little head between my foot and the bar on the chair and took a little nap.

On Sept. 9 Michelle wrote:
Brutus was not very happy when I blocked him from the big rocks. Thank you for letting me know about the dangers of jumping when they are pups. I was going to ask the vet tomorrow when we go for our first visit with his new vet. I don't know why I didn't thinly to ask you if it could harm him.

With the photo below she wrote:  It was definitely meant for us to have the biggest and not the smallest puppy from the liter. This was snapped just before we had a discussion on why little boy can not touch my puppy unless the are sitting on the floor with Aunt Shell next to them.

Two very happy smiles. These are the shots that warm my heart.
When Brutus is not napping on the vent (which we closed off so he won't get sick from air blowing directly on him) he enjoys napping on his place mat.

Update on Boomer

For those who may not remember, Boomer was one of the two puppies I had to bottle feed because he was so small. Not so anymore!!! Here is a report and photos from his new family.

Hi Jacqui!
I wanted to give you a little update on Jackson (aka Boomer)! He is doing GREAT!  We can't believe we got so lucky to have such a good little puppy!
He is growing so much and at his last Vet visit weighed in at about 4.5 lbs!  He has completely adjusted to the routine at our house and has even learned a few little tricks!
His latest is ringing the bell at the back door everytime he needs to take a potty break outside (Yea! No more accidents in the house!) Right off the bat we were able to teach him to fetch (his favorite game to play) and last week he learned to "sit" and "shake" on command!  He can follow with the leash and is learning to stay in the yard... Such a smart boy!
Our favorite time with him is after Logan goes to bed and he gets some quiet couch time with Joel and I and lot's of extra snuggles....
He's so sweet and loves to play... doesn't chew on much (other than his toys) and is definitely my little shadow during the day when it's just him and I. Everyone who meets him is smitten and I've passed out your website/blog to a few people like us who may be looking for a puppy in the future!
We are so happy with him!
Hope everything is going well,
Enjoy the pictures!

Havanese Puppy Update: Storm

Storm left with her forever home on Sept. 14 when she was 9 weeks old. She is one of Phoebe's puppies with a spunky personality and a passion for giving lots of kisses. A Canadian citizen now, here are some of Storm's family's comments about her. And, yes, they decided to keep her name as it pretty much describes her personality!

Well, she is still doing great.  Had a perfect visit to the vet today.  Barely even barked at the shot she got.  The vet used to live in Michigan and volunteered with the Havanese Rescue Society.  He was so happy to see her as he says we just don't see this type of dog around here.  That made me feel good that he was so familiar with the breed.

She weighed 3.1 pounds so is definitely growing.  We go back in a month again for more shots.

She loves to run and play several times a day and then sleeps like a baby after.  She has slept through the night once but usually gets up once or twice still.  Not too bad.  She goes right back to sleep with no issues after she wakes.

I haven't taken any pictures at the winery yet but here are a couple from our house.

She is a precious little girl.  | have completely fallen in love with her.  My husband who grew up with larger farm dogs plays with her all night when he gets home from work.  She really likes him and goes nuts when he gets home.

We are having 6 people over tomorrow for a birthday party so we will see how she does with so many around her.

Will update more later.

Havanese Puppy Update: Blaze

Blaze was our littlest puppy of all sixteen but don't tell him that because he won't believe you. Big things do come in small packages. He has a heart as big as a forest and a personality to match.

He is now living just around the corner from me with a family of two adults and their three children. I am so glad we found such a good home for this little trooper...and that I will (hopefully) see him from time to time.

Here's what his family has to say about Blaze, now renamed Flash for the current super hero!

Hi Jacqui
Just wanted to let you know that we are having a blast with our Flash! He has a spectacular (and very feisty) personality and is so loving and affectionate. He already knows to ring the bells to get outside and he's doing very well with his potty training. We just love him!! Thank you is much for giving him such a great start!! He is very happy and very very loved!!

PS I will send a few more photos for you!!

And I forgot to tell you that he weighed 3.2 pounds at the vet on 9-7. He's really growing!

Note: If you are new to my blog you may not know that this little guy weighed 2.8 ounces when he was born! I tube fed then bottle fed him for three weeks. Now he's making up his slow start which really warms my heart. Can't wait to hear how big he is in a year.
